How to make a watercolor sky shine
To make a watercolor sky shine, add a foreground to it: a mountain, trees, foliage, a river in perspective, a town by the sea, or a reflection on water with boats or a bridge. The best ideas are the ones you have already created without knowing it. Gather all the watercolor skies you have painted, look at what you put underneath them, and you will find many ways to bring your sky to life.
Why do you feel stuck once your watercolor sky is done?
When you get a sky right, very often you don't want to touch it anymore. One of my students wrote me exactly that a few days ago. She had painted 2 skies and found them quite beautiful. At the same time, she felt that a sky on its own looks a bit poor, and she wanted to know what she could do next.
I know this feeling very well. The sky puts a lot of pressure on you. It feels okay, and you are afraid that anything you add will spoil it.
What happened when I added trees under my sky?
A few weeks ago, I was painting a picture sent by one of my students. I applied my system, the Loose Watercolor System:
- I wet my paper.
- I added a little bit of pigment.
- I added even more pigment.
- I painted the clouds negatively with the blue sky around them.
When I got there, I was so afraid of ruining my watercolor sky. It felt okay to me and I just wanted to leave it alone. But the students who were painting live with me said: "Yes, but there is this foreground with those trees, don't you want to paint them?"
Even though I was really afraid of adding those trees, I decided to give it a go. When I saw the final result, I thought: wow, this is so beautiful. Adding this foreground was the best decision, even though the sky put so much pressure on me.
This is exactly the same issue my student had: how can I make this watercolor shine? And this is exactly what I showed her.
Where can you find ideas for what to add to your sky?
The best ideas to make a watercolor sky shine are the ideas you already created, without knowing it.
I keep all the subjects I paint with my students in one place. In 1 year only, we painted more than 200 subjects together, and I can sort them with keywords. When I type "ciel", which means "sky" in French, I get 66 results. Scrolling down, I find a sky I painted on the 8th of September with my interpretation of it, then a figure, a building with stairs, and many more.
So I told her: you only need to gather all the watercolor skies you have already painted, and you will get so many ideas.
Which subjects can you add under a watercolor sky?
By just having a look at what I had already painted, I found many ideas within seconds:
- A mountain
- Some foliage
- Some trees
- A river in perspective
- Trees with a house or a farm
- Electric wires
- Palm trees
- A town with the sea
- Only the top of a building
2 of them were the same topic, a town with the sea, and it works marvelously well. There are so many ideas you can get from the paintings you already did.
What can you add if your sky is reflected in water?
Her second sky made me think of a sky with its reflection on the water. So I kept the keyword for skies and added the keyword "reflection". Again, I got the same kind of ideas:
- Boats with masts
- A harbor
- A hill with the reflection of the sky
- A perspective with a bridge
It's crazy how many ideas this gives you.
What are watercolor LEGO and how do they help your sky?
You just need to take what I call a watercolor LEGO, a mountain, trees, a boat or a bridge, and add it to your sky. You will see that it makes your watercolor sky shine even brighter.
I created this sorting tool for my French students, and its goal is to play with all those watercolor LEGO. They are the pillar of my proven system, the Loose Watercolor System, which is how I paint any subject in watercolor without a tutorial.

Should I leave my watercolor sky alone if I like it?
Not necessarily. I was afraid of spoiling my sky, but adding a foreground of trees was the best decision I made on that painting. A sky alone can feel a bit poor, and the foreground made it beautiful.
